Work life balance in a hectic job

We have all faced situations at work where a sudden important project for the company crops up and it quickly becomes your life’s mission to solve it, making work our priority and everything else in our personal life a secondary thought. Our professional aspirations should not jeopardise our own wellbeing, however maintaining work life balance today has become an impossible task. With the ongoing Covid-19 situation, organisations have gone digital, making workers accessible around the clock. A Harvard Business School survey reported that a whopping 94% of working professionals reported working more than 50 hours per week and nearly half said they worked more than 65 hours per week. Although maintaining work life balance maybe a challenge, here are a few tips to help you find it:

1.     Structured planning of work:

  • Plan the day to day activities at work.

  • Prioritize activities in accordance with the importance of a task.

  • Spare time to focus on things other than work to rejuvenate yourself.

2.     Unplugging:

  • Take out time every day and shut your phone off, enjoy the moment, unplug and unwind to recharge yourself.

  • By not reacting to the constant updates from work, you develop a stronger habit of resilience. “Resilient people feel a greater sense of control over their lives,” says Brooks, a professor at Harvard medical school.

  • Unplugging also makes you less reactive people, have more control over yourself and less prone to stress.

3.     Encouraging Hobbies:

  • Every one of us has a hobby like reading, painting, photography, dancing, collecting old stamps and so on. A good work-life balance is about giving importance to such things that one loves doing.

  • With all hue and cry between managing work and family, you often miss feeding your own hopes and aspirations. Having a hobby encourages you to take up some time for yourself and indeed helps fulfil the thirst for a good life.

  • Having a hobby helps you to make up time for yourself even amidst their tight schedule.

4.     Maintain a healthy lifestyle:

  • Just like having good physical health helps one to stay energetic, a stress-free mind is a room full of clarity. This helps you to excel both in their career and life.

  • A healthy lifestyle is also a great stress management solution and helps you cope with stress smoothly.

  • Think of smaller ways you can get the blood flowing, like changing up your commute to walk or bike to work, YouTube-ing a short yoga or abs routine that you can do at home, or even just spending 10 minutes stretching when you wake up.
